Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival 2007
Coleman Hawkins, considered the father of the jazz saxophone was honored for the ninth year in the place of his birth, Saint Joseph Missouri.
The ninth annual Colman Hawkins Jazz Festival that was held this Friday, June 15th and Saturday the 16th in St. Joseph Mo was another hit according to the residents of that historic city Coleman Randolph Hawkins born in St. Joseph on Nov.21,1904 acquired his love for music from his mother who was an organist. He began studying piano at age 5 and took up the saxophone around the age of 9. Spotted in Kansas City in 1922 by Mamie Smith he started playing with her band: "The Jazz Hounds." In 1924 he joined Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra and stayed with them for the next 10 years before going to Europe with Jack Hylton's Orchestra. Then in 1939 he returned to America. Coleman's biggest hit came in 1940 from his recording of his version of "Body and Soul." Before his death in 1969 he had played and or recorded with Jazz Greats like: Miles Davis, Red McKenzie's Mound City Blue Blowers, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, And Louis Armstrong. This years line up included jazz greats such as: Saxophonist Bobby Watson w The quartet played some of their favorites like: "River Jordan" and "Karita" a song off his album: "Beatitudes". Other groups included: "Ray Alburn Big Band with Kathleen Holeman", "Mid-America All Star Jazz Ensemble", the "Colman Hawkins Jazz Society All Stars", "Kim Park- sax, flute, and pianist ", Soloist, "Kimberly Ford", and the five
The City known for the bank robber and outlaw Jesse James and the Pony Express postal service, that didn't last but a few months, Saint Joe would like to change the image of the city to a more positive one were it can be known for its historic, true to life, home town hero, and bona fide jazz legend, Coleman Hawkins.
